Equestrian Use & Trails

A wide desert trail winds through San Tan Mountain Regional Park, surrounded by saguaro cacti, low desert vegetation, and mountain views under a clear blue sky.San Tan Mountain Regional Park welcomes equestrians, hikers, and mountain bikers. Visitors bringing horses must remain on designated trails. Unless otherwise posted, all trails are multi-use, and all users are encouraged to practice proper trail etiquette.


Horse Staging Area

A designated horse staging area is available within the park. Please refer to the maps section for trail access and route options.


Trail Overview

San Tan Mountain Regional Park offers more than 20 miles of trails that range from easy to challenging. Trail lengths vary from approximately one mile to over five miles, providing options for all experience levels.

Easy: Moonlight Trail

A scenic and relatively gentle route, the Moonlight Trail is ideal for a shorter hike. This trail offers a relaxing way to experience the desert landscape and is suitable for most visitors.

Challenging: San Tan Trail (6.4 miles)

For a longer, more demanding adventure, the San Tan Trail winds through the Broken Lands and Central Valley before climbing toward the Goldmine Mountains. Portions of this trail can be challenging due to washes, soft soil, and steep, rocky terrain. Visitors should use caution in these areas.

Scenic Favorite: Malpais Hills Trail

The Malpais Hills Trail offers striking views of Rock Peak and the surrounding hills, providing a unique perspective of the park’s rugged landscape.


Wildlife & Experience

As you explore, keep an eye out for desert wildlife such as javelinas, coyotes, and Gila monsters. The park’s trails offer a unique opportunity to experience the diversity of the lower Sonoran Desert, from plant life to panoramic mountain views.

  • All trails are multi-use unless otherwise designated

  • Bring plenty of water—desert conditions can be extreme
