Maricopa County Celebrates National Take A Hike Day

National_Take_A_Hike_DayIt’s been a long, hot summer here in Arizona! But relief is finally on the horizon as upcoming weather models show the temperature trending downward instead of upward. And you know what that means? It’s time to hit the great outdoors and reconnect with nature!

“After months telling everyone to recreate during the early morning or evening hours to avoid the heat, we can now just say, take a hike!” said Maricopa County Parks and Recreation director R.J. Cardin. “Our team will be placing extra emphasis on that phrase over the week as we approach the tenth season we’ve celebrated National Take a Hike Day!”

While most parks and recreation industry agencies celebrate National Parks and Recreation Month throughout July and encourage park visitors to hit the trails, Maricopa County’s Parks and Recreation Department does not due to the heat. However, when the department discovered National Take a Hike Day, which occurs on November 17, they quickly embraced it and decided to celebrate this day annually.

“To ensure everyone has an opportunity to enjoy National Take a Hike Day, the Board has waived the day-use entry fee into all of Maricopa County’s regional parks,” added Clint Hickman, Chairman of the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors, District 4. “I encourage you to invite your family and friends out to one of our many parks for a picnic, hike, or a park program led by an interpretive ranger. Better yet, make a day of it!”

In addition, the department recently kicked off its annual 100 Miles in 100 Days Challenge on November 1. Participants are encouraged to use the free entry day to explore a park they’ve been wanting to visit or take a ranger-led hike.

While temperatures are trending downward, park visitors are reminded to wear sunscreen, appropriate hiking attire, and bring an ample water supply for all members of their party.

In recognition of National Take a Hike Day, the $7 per vehicle day-use entry fee will be waived at all Maricopa County regional parks on Friday, November 17, 2023. All other fees apply. To find a regional park near you, visit www.maricopa.gov/parks.
