Learn about birds of the Sonoran Desert on this hike with Ranger Eric! Click on program title for details.

Join Ranger Eric to look for a hike focused on birds and plants of the Sonoran Desert. Along the way, we will discuss basic bird and plant identification, ecology of the Sonoran Desert, and how both groups are adapted to this arid environment. This hike starts on easy to moderate grade for the first 1-1.5 miles before increasing in very difficult/strenuous. If participants are up for tackling a harder part of the hike, we will attempt to go higher up on Goat Camp Trail to a dry rock waterfall and rock bench (about 2.1 miles and up just over 1000 ft in elevation from the trailhead). Participants are welcome to turn around at any point if they need to. We will hike for approximately 5 hours if we make it up to the dry rock fall (total time may vary depending on our pace and participant interest).

Of ecological interest, Goat Camp Canyon contains many relict plant species from when the climate was different, including a stand of elephant trees, one of the northernmost populations of this species, which is an important food source for wintering and migrant gray vireos, a songbird endemic to the Southwest that spends the summer in chaparral and juniper woodlands. Please wear sturdy footwear, protective clothing and/or sunscreen, carry ample water (at least 3
liters recommended) and snacks, and binoculars or camera if you have them. Some binoculars may be available to borrow. Restrooms are located at Area 2 and also at the Nature Center next to the White Tanks Public Library.

For those of you participating in the 100 Miles in 100 Days Challenge, this is a great way to work towards your goal! The challenge runs from Nov.1-Feb. 8.
