Join Ranger Nikki on a long-distance trek to explore our beautiful Sonoran Desert and visit a unique geological feature in the park. Click program title for more details.

Join Ranger Nikki on a 10.5-mile hike to see the Marcus Landslide, a granite avalanche that slid from McDowell Mountain approximately 500,000 years ago. The mountain and boulder debris field sit on the east side of the park bordering on the neighboring McDowell Sonoran Preserve. The route uses Pemberton, Tonto Tank and Boulder Trails for an out-and-back trek. We will take a rest break at the base of the mountain and investigate some of the rock formations before heading back. The terrain is mostly flat and even but has some areas of slight elevation gain and rocky, uneven surfaces. Previous hiking experience is recommended for this moderately-paced endurance trek. Be sure to wear durable, closed-toe shoes. Bring plenty of water (recommended 3 liters and a source of electrolytes), salty and sugary snacks, a hat and sunscreen. Dress in layers to be comfortable as the day warms up. Hiking poles are helpful for the distance. Restrooms and water are available at the trailhead.
