Ready to get off the beaten path? Join Ranger Jacque to explore a more remote and lesser-known part of the park for a challenging fitness hike to celebrate the start of the Maricopa County Parks annual 100 Miles in 100 Days Challenge! This popular challenge, which runs from November 1 to February 8, invites you to hike, run, bike, or horseback ride 100 miles across at least three different county parks to earn a limited-edition finisher's shirt.
This 5.1-mile total out-and-back hike is perfect for accumulating miles toward your goal. The route features a 666-foot elevation gain and follows a rocky trail that winds along the Agua Fria River. Because much of the trail is uneven, we recommend this program for hikers 12 and up with sturdy hiking boots, and those with mobility or balance issues are encouraged to bring hiking poles. Please check the weather and wear appropriate clothing, hiking shoes, hat/sunscreen. Pack plenty of water, electrolytes, and salty snacks. There is a bathroom available at the trailhead, but no water, so make sure you are prepared.
Arrival Note: We meet at a remote trailhead accessed via a 5-mile stretch of primarily dirt road (West Table Mesa Road) from the freeway—expect dusty and gravelly conditions. We strongly recommend setting your map app or GPS while still in town or before taking the exit, as you will likely lose cell reception as you head toward the river. Also make sure your phone is fully charged, and go into airplane mode at the start of the hike to conserve battery.

Directions: Going Northbound on the I-17, exit on West Table Mesa Road, go past the gas plant and Cemex sign, and veer left at the following two forks. Continue all the way to the end of the road. There will be a small bathroom building/ contact station. Please make sure to use the link above or coordinates and allow extra time to drive slowly through the 5-mile dirt road to access the remote trailhead.
