The US National Weather Service has issued an Excessive Heat Warning for our area. Maricopa County Parks & Recreation takes the safety of our visitors seriously. As such, to align with local weather officials' recommendation of avoiding outdoor activity during the hottest parts of the day, the decision has been made to cancel this program. This website is the best source of up-to-date information about the status of Ranger programs. We hope you'll check back here and consider attending another of our many upcoming programs!
Ranger Nikki will lead you on an easy, family-friendly walk to search for bark, striped-tail and giant hairy scorpions. We will also be on the lookout for nocturnal critters such as scorpions, bats, owls, tarantulas, kangaroo rats, stink bugs and more. The route uses Gila Trail, a ½ mile loop that is rated Barrier-free, with a compacted dirt surface and no obstacles. The terrain is level and appropriate for wide-wheeled strollers. Bring your blacklight to view scorpions and a regular flashlight to view other desert nightlife. No pets, please. Wear closed-toe shoes and bring plenty of water. Restrooms and water are available at the Nature Center and picnic area (on your way to the trailhead) and a portable restroom is available at the Trailhead. Please bring $7 exact cash for the self-pay station or your annual pass to display on your vehicle.
There are two sessions for this walk: 7-8pm and 8-9pm. Please specify your time when registering.
Please note: Outdoor summer programs may be canceled on short notice due to severe weather, including extreme heat events. The Maricopa County Parks website (http://www.maricopa.gov/parks) is the most accurate resource for verifying the program’s current status. Please check the program listing online before coming to the park.
