Join Rangers Kevin, Jacque, and Eric on horseback for a scenic ride and mine tour featuring a fascinating glimpse into Arizona's past. Must be 6+ and able to mount/dismount independently. Click program title for more details.

Saddle up for a roughly 1.5-mile round-trip horseback ride to the Clay Mine, where Leila Irish built a unique business based on a remarkable natural discovery. This 1.5-hour program features a guided tour of the mine and explores a fascinating story of innovation, ambition, and the pursuit of the American Dream.

Your experience begins at Cave Creek Trail Rides with a 30-minute safety orientation and horse-fitting session; all participants must be present for this portion. You'll spend approximately 40 minutes total in the saddle: riding out to the mine, then back after your visit. Midway through, you'll dismount for a 20-minute interpretive experience inside the mine itself. The mine features a narrow entry passageway that opens into a stand-up space, so visitors should be prepared for a brief confined section. For those with claustrophobia concerns, a bench and open area with a scenic view are available just outside; you are welcome to enjoy the surroundings while others explore inside.

All participant registration is managed by Cave Creek Trail Rides, which is located within the regional park. A ride fee applies, and standard park entry ($10 per vehicle or annual pass) is also required. Participants must be 6 years of age or older and be physically able to mount and dismount a horse without assistance twice, as we will dismount midway through the ride to enter the Clay mine.  Helmets are provided by Cave Creek Trail Rides at no additional cost and are strongly encouraged. If you choose not to wear a helmet, a waiver will be required. Weight limits and other policies may apply — see Cave Creek Trail Rides for details.

What to wear and bring: Wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes or boots and long pants. Bring a water bottle — saddlebags are provided to carry it during the ride. Dress in layers appropriate for outdoor conditions (make sure to check the weather beforehand), and come prepared for Arizona sun: a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen are all recommended. Portable restrooms are available at the meeting location.

This program is weather-dependent; registrants will be notified of any changes.
