August, with its potential for monsoon activity, is a great time to learn about water – the need for it, the dangers of it and the struggles to control too much of it. With this program, created by Maricopa County Flood Control District, students can get a better understanding of the weather that happens around them and the important role that dams play in keeping us safe and providing us with a water reserve. We will do an exercise to illustrate the water cycle processes of evaporation, condensation and precipitation and finish with a hands-on experiment to tackle the very real task of managing the runoff and collection elements of the cycle. After the lesson we will take a short walk behind the Nature Center to see firsthand some of the natural elements that cause water movement and human efforts to deal with it. Wear closed-toe shoes, sun-protective clothing and a hat for our walk outside. Be sure to bring plenty of water. Restrooms and water are available at the Nature Center.

Registration is for school-age students Grade K and up. Younger siblings and adults do not count toward the registration limit, but please mention group total when registering to assist with seating setup.

MEETING LOCATION:  Nature Center

Limit 20 student participants. To register, please call the Estrella Nature Center at (602) 506-2930 ext. 6 with your name, phone number and number of people attending. If you find you cannot attend a program after you have registered, please call the Nature Center ASAP so we may contact those on the waiting list. Registration for this program closes on 8/11/26.
