It’s time for another full moon in our desert. June brings the Strawberry Moon, traditionally nicknamed for red berries that ripen this time of year. Instead of red berries, we desert dwellers might see the ripened red fruit of our majestic saguaros. This evening’s full moon is also a “Micromoon”, the name given to a full moon when it coincides with the point in the moon’s orbit that is farthest away from Earth (approximately 251,655 miles!). The route uses Goldmine, San Tan and the Service Road trails to make a 3-mile loop. Stops are planned to watch the Full Moon rise around 8pm and to enjoy the views. (The hike starting time of 7:15 should get us in a good location for viewing). The terrain ranges from flat and level to uneven with small to medium rocks underfoot. A section of San Tan Trail has short but steep inclines and declines that are rocky. Hiking poles may be helpful. (If you are looking for a full moon adventure geared toward family and kids, the Walk on Sunday night might be for you instead). Bring a regular flashlight and optional UV light for viewing scorpions. No pets, please. Wear closed-toe shoes and bring plenty of water. Restrooms and fountain water are available at the Nature Center. The Entry Station will be closed so please bring $10 exact cash for the self-pay station or display your Annual Pass on your vehicle.

PLEASE NOTE: Outdoor summer programs may be canceled on short notice due to severe weather, including extreme heat events. The Maricopa County Parks website (http://www.maricopa.gov/parks) is the most accurate resource for verifying the program’s status. Please check the program listing online before coming to the park.
