The US National Weather Service has issued an Excessive Heat Warning for our area. Maricopa County Parks & Recreation takes the safety of our visitors seriously. As such, to align with local weather officials' recommendation of avoiding outdoor activity during the hottest parts of the day, the decision has been made to cancel this program. This website is the best source of up-to-date information about the status of Ranger programs. We hope you'll check back here and consider attending another of our many upcoming programs!
We’ll be heading out on a classic summer night hike. The route is roughly 2 miles over easy-moderate parts of the Gila, Baseline, Toothaker, and Horseshoe trails, so expect some uneven terrain, rocky surfaces and elevation change. While we're walking, we’ll also be on the lookout for any number of desert critters, including owls, scorpions, snakes and coyotes. At some point we'll turn our eyes skyward and pick out some notable stars and constellations. Bring plenty of water and wear sturdy, closed-toed shoes. Bring a flashlight and a black light if you have one to help the Ranger find scorpions near the trail. Portapotties are available at the trailhead and restrooms can be found in the large nearby picnic area.
