Desert Edible Plants Hike (Registration Required, Limit 30 Participants)

Join Ranger Derik on a hike through the park and learn about the native foods and medicines all around you and about the first people that used them. Click program title for more details.

The hike will cover 2 miles round trip on a half paved and half dirt trail to a season waterfall with roundly 250 ft of elevation gain. This hike is rated as easy and has many benches along the way. Hikers will learn about how to harvest and identify a variety of in season wild edible plants however there will be no harvesting of the foods so that wildlife can survive the drier season in the park. Along the way you will step back in time as you walk through an ancient Hohokam village and learn about how they survived of the wild edible plants provided by the desert. Hikers should bring water, sunscreen and wear close toed shoes. Hiking poles can be helpful getting to and from the seasonal waterfall. Bathrooms and water are located at the parking lot.

Limit 30 participants. To register, please call the Nature Center at (602) 506-2930 ext. 5 with your name, phone number and number of people attending. If you find you cannot attend a program after you have registered, please call the Nature Center ASAP so we may contact those on the waiting list.
