Celebrate the America 250 milestone by experiencing one of the desert’s most iconic sights! Join Ranger Jacque for a guided evening hike to witness the Strawberry Moon rise over the Mazatzal Mountains—a celestial event that has inspired explorers, settlers, and indigenous peoples throughout 250 years of our nation's story.
This 2-mile hike is rated easy to moderate and features an elevation gain of under 200 feet. We will begin with a nature walk along the Tortoise Trail, exploring the desert as the day cools. Then, we will climb the short Hilltop Trail (approximately 0.5 miles) to reach a perfect vantage point for the moonrise. As the silver light of the moon envelops the landscape, we’ll discuss the nocturnal history of the West and look for signs of the desert coming to life after dark.
Please wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes, bring plenty of water, and carry a handheld flashlight (please refrain from using headlamps to preserve our night vision). Restrooms and water are available near the trailhead staging area. Please allow 15 minutes upon park arrival to use the self-pay station ($10 vehicle entry) and reach the trailhead, which is a few miles past the park entry. No pets, please.
