Join Ranger Nikki on an easy 2-mile stroll to enjoy the sunset, full moon and our summertime rock stars: scorpions! Click program title for more details.

Ranger Nikki will lead you on a slow-paced walk to watch the sky change to hues of red, white and blue as the full moon peeks over the horizon. June brings the Strawberry Moon, traditionally nicknamed for red berries that ripen this time of year. Instead of red berries, we desert dwellers might see the ripened red fruit of our majestic saguaros. This evening’s full moon is also a “Micromoon”, the name given to a full moon when it coincides with the point in the moon’s orbit that is farthest away from Earth (approximately 251,655 miles!). As darkness settles, we will also search for bark, striped-tail and giant hairy scorpions. Of course, there’s a chance we may see other nocturnal critters such as bats, owls, tarantulas, geckos, centipedes, stink bugs and more! The route is an out-and-back walk on the Service Road, a wide dirt pathway that is mostly level but has some uneven surfaces at the far end. Wide-wheeled strollers or wagons can navigate the terrain but may require extra muscle through a short length of sand at the beginning and over the bumps at the turnaround point. (This walk is geared toward families and kids. If you are looking for a more challenging adventure, please consider the Full Moon Hike on Monday night). Bring your UV blacklight to see scorpions fluoresce and a regular flashlight to light your way. No pets, please. Wear closed-toe shoes and bring plenty of water. Restrooms and water are available at the Nature Center. The Entry Station will be closed so please bring $10 exact cash for the self-pay station or your annual pass to display on your vehicle.

PLEASE NOTE: Outdoor summer programs may be canceled on short notice due to severe weather, including extreme heat events. The Maricopa County Parks website (http://www.maricopa.gov/parks) is the most accurate resource for verifying the program’s status. Please check the program listing online before coming to the park.
