America 250 Sunset and Saguaros: Hiking the American Desert (Registration Required, Limit 25)

Join Ranger Jacque for a special sunset hike to celebrate our nation's 250th anniversary year while exploring the ancient, iconic saguaros that have stood as sentinels over the American desert since before our country's founding. Click program title for more details.

Celebrate the spirit of America250 on this scenic sunset hike through the heart of the Sonoran Desert. We will walk among desert giants—the saguaros—some of which have been growing since the dawn of the American story This 3.2-mile loop begins at Area 10, heading west on the Maricopa Trail, south on Moon Rock Trail, north on NoSo, and west on Blevins to return to the start. 

The terrain is rocky, but the elevation change is minimal, about 100 feet. Along the way, Ranger Jacque will discuss the incredible resilience of these desert icons and their vital role in the American landscape. Experience the beauty of the "golden hour" as the sun sets, painting a landscape that has inspired generations of explorers and dreamers. Please wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes, bring plenty of water, and wear sun protection for the start of the hike. Bring a handheld flashlight for after the sun goes downRestrooms are available at the trailhead.

Limit 25 participants. To register, please call the Usery Nature Center at (602) 506-2930 ext. 4 with your name, phone number, and number of people attending. If you find you cannot attend a program after you have registered, please call the Nature Center ASAP so we may contact those on the waiting list. Registration for this program will close on 06/01/26.  

Outdoor summer programs may be canceled on short notice due to severe weather, including extreme heat events. The Maricopa County Parks website (www.maricopa.gov/parks) is the most accurate resource for verifying the program’s status.
