Ranger Nikki will start the program with visual aids and preserved specimens to help you learn about and identify different types of scorpions. Then we will take a walk to search for bark, striped-tail and giant hairy scorpions as well as other nocturnal critters such as bats, owls, tarantulas, kangaroo rats and more. We will head toward the creek bed on Spur Cross Trail and follow Metate to the Solar Oasis water feature, returning the same way. The distance covered is up to 1.5 miles and the terrain varies from rocky and uneven on a short section of Spur Cross Trail to flat and even on Metate. Bring your UV blacklight to find scorpions and a regular flashlight to spotlight other critters and to light your way. No pets, please. Wear closed-toe shoes and bring plenty of water. Portable restrooms are available at the main trailhead, ¼ mile past the Entry Station. There is no water available at the Park so bring plenty from home.
*Please note: Entry to Spur Cross Conservation Area is $5 per person. The Entry Station will be closed so bring exact cash for the Self-Pay station or your Annual Pass to display on your vehicle.
PLEASE NOTE: Outdoor summer programs may be canceled on short notice due to severe weather, including extreme heat events. The Maricopa County Parks website (http://www.maricopa.gov/parks) is the most accurate resource for verifying the program’s current status. Please check the program listing online before coming to the park.
