It’s time for another full moon in our desert! Ranger Nikki will lead you on a slow-paced hike to watch the sunset and enjoy the Full Moon floating above as night settles in and the mountains and cacti fade to silhouettes. Nocturnal critters such as bats, owls, tarantulas, geckos, centipedes, stink bugs and more might be stirring about, so bring your flashlight. Of course, our ubiquitous scorpions will be there, too, so be sure to bring your UV light to see them fluoresce. We will make a 2.2-mile loop using portions of Overton, Clay Mine, GO John, Jasper and Slate Trails. The hike starts with a short but steep climb up Overton Trail until we connect to Clay Mine Trail. The route is mainly on terrain that is uneven with small to medium rocks underfoot. To increase our chances of seeing critters - No pets, please. Wear closed-toe shoes and bring plenty of water. The Nature Center will be closed but restrooms and a water fountain are available on the front patio. The Entry Station may be closed so be prepared with $10 exact cash for the self-pay station or display your Annual Pass on your vehicle.
