Take A Hike, Maricopa County! Celebrate National Take A Hike Day On November 17

National_Take_A_Hike_Day2024The Maricopa County Parks and Recreation Department invites the community to lace up their hiking boots and hit the trails on Monday, November 17, 2025, to celebrate National Take a Hike Day. To make your visit even better, the $7 per vehicle day-use park entry fee will be waived at all regional parks (other fees still apply).

Can you think of a better time to explore the County's 615-plus miles of scenic trails, enjoy the cooler fall weather, or add a few miles toward your 100 Miles in 100 Days Challenge? Neither can we!

"Hiking gives us the chance to step away from the rush of everyday life, breathe in the fresh desert air, and appreciate the incredible beauty of our Sonoran landscape," said Thomas Galvin, Chairman of the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors, District 2. "From the Hassayampa River Preserve, located in the far northwest valley, to McDowell Mountain Regional Park, located in my district in the east valley, our regional parks offer so many places to relax, explore, and recharge. So, join me in getting outside and taking a hike!"

"National Take a Hike Day is the perfect time to explore everything our parks have to offer," said Jennifer Waller, Maricopa County Parks and Recreation Director. "Our park rangers are offering a variety of programs on November 17, from nighttime scorpion hunts and searches for nocturnal critters to learning about life along the Gila River and exploring our park ecosystems. Between these special programs and the miles of trails that make up the Maricopa Trail, there's something for everyone—hikers, trail runners, mountain bikers, and horseback riders alike. And after months of reminding visitors to beat the heat by hiking early in the morning or late in the evening, we can finally say, Take a hike!"

Below are a couple of tips to help you prepare for your outing.

  • Stay on designated trails.
  • Tell someone where you are hiking and when you expect to return.
  • Carry plenty of water for your entire hike. Remember to bring water for your dog.
  • Turn around and return to the trailhead when your water is half gone.
  • Carry a cell phone.
  • Don't hike alone.
  • Wear appropriate hiking footwear and clothing.
  • Use maps, and know where you are going and what kind of terrain you are hiking on.
