How to Volunteer | Systemwide

Volunteer with Maricopa County Parks & Recreation

Volunteers play a vital role in supporting Maricopa County’s regional parks and trail system. Each year, volunteers contribute more than 90,000 hours of service, helping maintain parks, assist visitors, and protect natural resources.

Whether you’re looking for a long-term role or a one-time opportunity, there are many ways to get involved.

Core Volunteers

Core Volunteers—also known as Park Hosts or Community Volunteers—work closely with park staff and take on a variety of important responsibilities.

Typical duties may include:

  • Assisting at nature centers or entry stations
  • Providing visitor information and customer service
  • Helping with campground check-ins
  • Supporting maintenance and conservation efforts
  • Assisting with interpretive programs and special projects

Some Core Volunteers also serve as Trail Ambassadors or Desert Defender Stewards.

Because of the level of responsibility, Core Volunteers are asked to commit to a set schedule and complete:

  • Background and driving history checks
  • Annual motor vehicle record (MVR) review
  • Safety and park-specific training

For more information on Core Volunteer opportunities, please visit the volunteer application page.

Service Volunteers

Service Volunteers provide flexible opportunities for individuals or groups who want to give back without a long-term commitment.

This option is ideal for:

  • Individuals with limited availability
  • Corporate or community groups
  • First-time volunteers

Service projects may include:

  • Education and recreation programs
  • Exhibit and display support
  • Park and trail maintenance
  • Natural resource projects
  • Community events

To get started, contact the Volunteer Coordinator to schedule a volunteer orientation.

Additional Opportunities

Special Days of Service

Throughout the year, parks host one-day volunteer events focused on specific projects. These opportunities are listed on the volunteer calendar.

Group Projects

Corporate and community groups can schedule:

  • Park clean-up events
  • Trail maintenance days

To coordinate a group project, contact the Volunteer Coordinator:
