Just 16 miles northwest of downtown Phoenix, Adobe Dam Regional Park spans more than 1,500 acres of desert landscape and recreation space. About half of the park — 761 acres — has been developed into one of the most activity-packed destinations in Maricopa County’s regional park system.
A Park Like No Other
Adobe Dam is truly one of a kind. It’s the only regional park in Maricopa County where you can:
- Float down a lazy river at a water park,
- Cheer at a baseball or softball game,
- Ride a model train or fly a model airplane,
- Race around a go-kart track, and
- Play a relaxing round of golf — all in the same day!
Families love Adobe Dam for its wide variety of attractions, including Six Flags Hurricane Harbor, Victory Lane Sports Complex, and several other concession-operated facilities that bring energy and excitement to the park year-round.
More Than Just Recreation
While it’s known for fun and family activities, Adobe Dam also serves an important purpose: flood control. The park sits within a flood control basin managed by Maricopa County’s Flood Control District. Construction of the Adobe Dam began in 1980 and was completed the following year to help protect surrounding communities from flooding.
Today, the Maricopa County Parks and Recreation Department manages the site in partnership with the Flood Control District, ensuring that all recreational facilities are designed to complement the dam’s safety and environmental functions.
A Bit of History
The Adobe Dam project was first authorized by the Flood Control Act of 1965 to safeguard nearby residential, commercial, and agricultural lands. Later, recreation and open space were added as secondary uses — a win-win for both flood protection and community enjoyment.
Since 1981, the park has been managed by the Parks and Recreation Department through a joint-use agreement, blending practical infrastructure with outdoor recreation opportunities for everyone to enjoy.
