Experience the desert like a detective! This combo program begins outside at the trailhead under the shade ramada for a brief tracking lesson. Ranger Jacque will provide handouts on common holes and tracks to help you identify the mysterious signs left behind by desert wildlife. As for scat, we will likely find that on our way! Then we’ll set out on the trails, enjoying the sunset and keeping a lookout for all kinds of evening active wildlife, from scorpions and spiders to owls, nightjars, reptiles, and mammals. The guided trek covers nearly 3 miles on the Blevins, Cat Peaks, and Cat Peak Pass trails. It is rated moderate with approximately 100 feet of elevation gain and features a hilltop overlook with stunning views of the city lights. Please wear sturdy closed toe shoes and carry plenty of water. Handheld flashlights are required for safety, and blacklights(optional) are recommended for the best scorpion spotting experience after dark. Restrooms and water are available at the trailhead. No pets please.
PLEASE NOTE: Outdoor summer programs may be canceled on short notice due to severe weather, including extreme heat events. The Maricopa County Parks website (www.maricopa.gov/parks) is the most accurate resource for verifying the program’s current status. Please check the program listing online before coming to the park.
