Join Ranger Kevin for an informative hike about the history of the Gila River and the indigenous people who relied on it to build one of pre-Columbian America’s greatest civilizations. Click program title for more details.

The Gila River was vital to the incredible success of the Ancestral Sonoran people, or Hohokam, who built a civilization that lasted a thousand years and more. We’ll examine that civilization’s history and celebrate their accomplishments as we move along the river in search of a glimpse of the Gila’s former glory.  We’ll also be looking and listening for a variety of wildlife who have returned to this resuscitated stretch of the river. The trail is approximately 2 miles and rated as moderately difficult, with stretches of loose rock, deep and sandy soil, and large rocks and other obstacles. Please wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes and bring plenty of water. Hats and sunscreen are also highly recommended. Restrooms and water are available at the Nature Center. NO pets, please.

MEETING LOCATION: Nature Center
