Homeschool Happenings is a twice monthly program series from July - September 2019.  The Desert Outdoor Center is a fun, hands-on, inquiry based learning center that can enhance your family’s education by encouraging a curiosity about nature, working with scientific concepts, and inspiring an appreciation for the Sonoran desert.  Each day offers three 50 minute environmental education programs with two dates to choose from each month taught by professional interpretive park rangers.

Limited space is available and pre-registration is required.  To sign up, call us at 602-372-7470, or leave a message at 602-372-7470 Extension 206. All programs will meet at the Desert Outdoor Center, require pre-registration, and a gate code for entry.  Cost is $10 per person (children and adults). Check in begins at 9:00am and programs start at 9:20am.

Please note to bring a lunch, snacks, and water bottles. No food is available on site. All visitors must exit the park after programs, the park closes at 12:50pm.

*Groups larger than 15 people may call to inquire about additional dates and program options.  Additional fees may apply.

9:00 Arrival and Check In

9:20 Park Rules with Ranger

9:30 Ancient Ones

Students will be provided a historical and hands-on look at Native American rock art. This class will emphasize the protection, preservation and history of artifacts. In addition, students will be given the opportunity to create their own petroglyphs.

10:20 Ten minute break

10:30 Venomous Creatures

Scorpions, centipedes, Gila monsters, and more. Learn about these mysterious sometimes frightening but beautiful desert friends, and what to do when encountered. Students explore how and when these creatures use their venom and differences between poison, venom, bite, and sting.

11:20 Thirty minute LUNCH

11:50 Bat Attitudes

This creative class will invite students into the dark realm of bats. Students will examine the uniqueness, physiology and adaptations of bats through presentation and simulated activities. This class is designed to dispel any misconceptions about these often misunderstood creatures.
