Join Ranger Eric for an early morning hike to look for and learn about resident and migratory birds of the Sonoran Desert before the day heats up! We will meet at the Quail Trailhead first and check out the nearby vegetation for birds, before g caravaning over to a primitive trail down by the Gila River, which involves a bit more moderate hiking. Even in summer, there is usually still water pooled in a lake along the river, fed by reclaimed wastewater from the Tres Rios Wetlands upstream. Along the river, we may be able to see cormorants, herons, pelicans, and other water birds. We will likely only hike about 1 mile total before it gets too hot, but may shorten the hike depending on the heat. Please carry ample water, wear sturdy footwear and sun protection, pre-hydrate and have electrolytes beforehand, and bring binoculars if you have them. Portapotties are located at Quail Trailhead.
