Did you know there are well over 250 species each of reptiles and amphibians native to the United States of America (actually around 300 species each!)? Many of these reptiles are iconic of the American Southwest desert, including rattlesnakes, desert tortoises, horned lizards, and Gila monsters, conjuring amazement and sometimes fear. Regardless of your feelings towards these reptiles, their unique adaptations to the desert and role in the lore of the region are always worth learning about and challenging the assumptions we have about them.
In preparation of celebrating America’s 250th birthday, join Ranger Eric to go 'herping' (looking for reptiles and amphibians) on this short hike on parts of Blevins and Amigos Wash Trails. The Sonoran Desert region has almost 150 species of native herps, with a couple dozen species of reptiles and amphibians combined at this park. We will discuss the biodiversity of the American Southwest including in the Sonoran Desert, identification and behavior of reptiles and amphibians, citizen science apps and websites, and safety around venomous wildlife as we go. Please wear sturdy footwear and sun protection, carry ample water for yourself, and pre-hydrate and take electrolytes beforehand. We will be walking on sand and some uneven or rocky surfaces, but the distance and time we spend on the hike will depend on the heat.
Note that I will be leading a night walk immediately after this from the same meeting location, so if the afternoon hike is too affected by higher heat, hopefully the evening one will benefit from cooler temperatures as the sun goes down. Restrooms are located at the Trailhead Staging Area parking lot.
