In honor of America 250, join Ranger Jacque for a unique guided archaeology tour to explore the indigenous heritage of the Sonoran Desert. As our nation reflects on 250 years of history, we will look even further back to the "lands before time," visiting three remarkable rock art sites and one ancient Hohokam ruins site.
This moderate 3.3-mile hike traverses the Tortuga Loop, featuring rocky and uneven terrain with approximately 300 feet of elevation gain. Along the way, we will discuss the sophisticated culture of the Hohokam, how they impact civilization today, and the vital importance of preserving these sacred sites as part of our shared American story.
Please wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes, bring plenty of water (none is available at the park), and consider a snack for our break at the ruins. Sun protection is highly recommended for the start of the hike. No pets, please.
Preservation Note: These archaeological sites are protected by Arizona law (A.R.S. § 41-841 et seq.) and may only be accessed with a ranger. Participants are encouraged to be site stewards to help preserve these special protected areas.
