Celebrate the America 250 milestone by experiencing one of the desert’s most iconic sights! Join Ranger Jacque for a guided evening hike to witness the Full Moon rise over the mountains—a celestial event that has inspired explorers, settlers, and indigenous peoples throughout 250 years of our nation's story.
This 2-mile hike is rated easy to moderate with slight elevation gain, some rocky paths, and hilly features. We will take the Metate trail loop, and as darkness falls, look for signs of the desert coming to life after dark.
Please wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes, bring plenty of water, and carry a handheld flashlight (please refrain from using headlamps to preserve our night vision). Portapotties (no water) are available near the trailhead. Please allow 15 minutes upon park arrival to use the self-pay station ($5 per person or display Maricopa County annual pass) and reach the trailhead, nearly a quarter mile walk from the parking lot.
PLEASE NOTE: Outdoor summer programs may be canceled on short notice due to severe weather, including extreme heat events. The Maricopa County Parks website (www.maricopa.gov/parks) is the most accurate resource for verifying the program’s current status. Please check the program listing online or call the Nature Center before coming to the park.
