Many people are surprised by the amount of plant life they find in the Sonoran Desert. Come with Ranger Shaun and have a closer look. Click program title for more details.

Join Ranger Shaun for a brief introduction to some of the more than 3,500 plant species that live in the Sonoran Desert. While deserts aren’t generally known for their biodiversity, the Sonoran Desert is the most biodiverse desert in North America and possibly on the planet, thanks to its unique location and weather patterns. Our plants have evolved to take advantage of the sporadic moisture to do some amazing things! From the water storing giant saguaros to the near death and resurrection cycle of our ocotillos and spike mosses – desert plants are up to stuff!

This hike will take us along small sections of several different trails including Overton, Slate, Jasper, Go John, and Clay Mine. All together it will total roughly 2-miles on easy and medium rated trails. No pets please. Water bottles with drinking water required as are closed toed shoes. Hats and sunscreen recommended. Hiking poles not required but may prove useful in some areas especially for people with more restricted mobility.
