(Maricopa County) – Last spring, hundreds of cyclists from around the country geared up for the inaugural Prickly Pedal Mountain Bike Race. They put the pedal to the metal, and raced along the Maricopa Trail from Lake Pleasant Regional Park towards the Town of Cave Creek.
On April 1, riders will once again return to the Maricopa Trail for a chance to claim bragging rights in their age category, and of course, a medal. However, this time, they’ll begin the race at Flat Tire Bikes in Cave Creek and travel the Maricopa Trail towards the 10-lane boat ramp at Lake Pleasant Regional Park.
Featuring a 40-miles course, the Prickly Pedal showcases the Maricopa Trails diversity. Aggressive ascents and descents, grinding it out on the flats, rocks, water, sand, mud, and roller coaster runs are all part of the fun of this challenging course. That’s right, this course is not for the faint of heart and even the most seasoned bikers may find themselves dismounting their bikes for a short hike.
For those with little ones, why not bring them out for a free kids race? The kid race takes place at Lake Pleasant Regional Park on a course designed by the Desert Foothills Mountain Bike Association with the little one’s needs in mind.
To ensure that the racers get off to a good start, all racers are invited to enjoy a free breakfast provided by Hickman’s Egg Ranch. Then, when they cross the finish line, they are invited to join the after party and awards presentation. The party will include refreshments, a raffle, beer garden, and live music. All racers, fans, family and friends are welcome to join in on the fun.
The Prickly Pedal Race is coordinated by the Maricopa Trail and Park Foundation. The Foundation is a non-profit organization which strives to provide sustainable financial support for the newly constructed Maricopa Regional Trail System.
The Prickly Pedal Race is sponsored by APS, City of Peoria, Robson Resort Communities, DMB, Total Transit, SRP, U-Haul, Pivot Cycles, iCoStore, EPCOR Water, Toyota, Prime Solutions Group, Cox, and Riester. Proceeds from the Prickly Pedal Mountain Bike Race go to support the Maricopa Trail and Park Foundation and Maricopa Trail.
